Books by the old guy

Author Joe Miller, an expert in storytelling

Words can wound, but they can also mend. I try to write the kind that do the latter–even if they leave a scar or two.

Writing, in all its forms, is how I try to make sense of the world–and maybe help others do the same. Whether it’s in the pages of a book, a blog post, retreat content, a song, or storytelling shared around a campfire. I believe words carry weight. They can bruise. They can also heal. Sometimes, they leave behind a scar that reminds us we’ve been through something worth remembering.

For me, books are where the deepest kind of work happens. They allow space for reflection, for transformation, and often, for the quiet truths that speak louder than the noise around us. Every book I’ve written grew out of something personal–something observed, endured, or wrestled with. Each carries a thread of grace, grit, and maybe a bit of mystery or humor. Notably, storytelling is woven into the fabric of each narrative.

Under the tab for this page on the main menu, you’ll find a dropdown menu with links to each of my published books. Each has its own dedicated page with background insights and the heart behind the story. In some cases, there are a few surprises I didn’t plan when I first sat down to write. These insights often highlight the role and necessity of storytelling.

Take your time. Let the stories speak. If one of them resonates with you or leaves a scar, may it be the kind that mends something deeper. It’s a testament to the power of storytelling.

Some days the words flow like sweet tea in summer. Other days they hide like your grandpa’s dentures–still there, just hard to find
