Musings from #oldguywritesbooks (a series)
What book, you ask?
The book within.
What are you talking about? I have no book within.
We all do–every one of us.
I don’t understand.
Let me put it this way: everyone alive has a story. It’s called their life story. Every life story is different because no two people are the same. Each story reflects the experiences that shape a person. Over time, these experiences influence how they think, behave, act, and react. In other words, your story is the truest version of you.
I understand that, thank you. But what’s that got to do with writing a book?
That’s a great question, and every author asks it in some way before they begin. Then, at some point, they realize something important: Their background makes them unique, and that uniqueness gives them the right to write. More importantly, they come to see that their perspective- their way of seeing the world- sets them apart. And once they recognize that, they feel a natural pull to express their view. Writing, in any form, becomes the perfect outlet.
That’s why writing a book doesn’t have to mean writing about yourself or your life story. It can be about anything–fiction or non-fiction.
Still, only two things stand between you and writing that book; your own doubts and the mechanics of the process. Most would-be authors reach a point where they hesitate, thinking they’re either not capable or don’t understand how to begin. However, the first obstacle is easier to overcome than you might think, And as for the second? It’s entirely fixable.
The conversation is to be continued.
